First things first... (does a dance of joy joy)
:I get all flames, I'm going to assume it's a new gene. If I get the expected result of 25% Tux, 25% Cobra and 50% Flame I'm going to do a dance of joy and assume they used the more genetically correct programming method.
I did the breeding, but did NOT get either of the two scenarios I expected. Instead, what I got was (out of a total of 13 males)
7 Cobra
6 Flame
I haven't matured them to 300 days yet (just 64 to see the pattern) so the Flames could be tuxes... my eyes aren't too good. Judging from the head color they are Flames... the Tuxes have a more grey/brown head and the flames more grey/gold. Just because they are an intermingling of two patterns does not mean that they aren't a pattern in and of themselves though! If you can perpetuate it to further generations than F1, in my mind that makes it a pattern. Breeding two of them together won't get ALL flames, but so long as some are there... Look at horses for a classic example of an incomplete dominant counting as it's own pattern! Palomino (gold with white mane/tail for those who aren't horse people) is caused by the dilution gene (C) over chestnut (totally recessive color). Breed a palomino to a chestnut and you have a 50/50 chance of getting Palomino and the same to get a chestnut. Breed two palominos together and you have a 50% chance of getting Cremello (two dilution genes) and 25% for palomino and chestnut. Might have garbled something in there... time for bed for me! I just think Flame (or whatever we end up calling it) qualifies as it's own pattern. : I do wonder if recessive genes exist... for instance, COULD those normal appearing offspring produce Cobra offspring when bred back to a cobra? Recessive genes DO exist as we know them... breeding the TxN variation offspring together got me both, no matter WHAT pattern the mother was... Now I just need to discover what is dominant to what. Easiest way to do this would be to breed my F1 mixes with pure CD Tuxes and Normals.
