: : : I was curious, so I thought I would ask. How many here have had "real" guppies, and if so, how do you think of the genetics of AZ corresponds to the real world?

: : Interesting question. I used to have "real" guppies, but they were practically wild ones, and had NO special breeding (i.e. no specific color strains, no fancy fins, etc.). I just liked 'em cuz they were colorful (the boys, anyway) and they made babies like there was no tomorrow :-) They were really "user-friendly", too, requiring no special conditions. Just kept 'em in a bowl, like you would a goldfish.

: I have some real ones too. My fancies refuse to have babies. It's not the angels eating fry...the females never get heavy with fry, despite an apparent gravid spot, good temperature & adequate feeding of live & prepared foods.
:
: I have feeder guppies for my turtles, in case they want a snack on the fly, & dumped them into the turtle tank. They are dropping babies religiously every 4 weeks. I have about 3x as many fish in there now as when I first put them in, and have seen the turtles chasing & catching them from time to time. The food chain works, I guess.

I raised real guppies (and angels, killies, swordtails) from 1974-1989. By '89 I was up to 100+ tanks. I rarely got beyond an F4 generation with a strain before running out of space and trading them below wholesale for above retail supplies. My only interest in AZ with guppies was the possibility of getting beyond an F4 generation with virtual fish without the water changes, brine shrimp hatching and expense that accompanied real guppies. The game has exceeded my wildest hopes. I have been able to recreate many of the real guppy strains I used to breed with AZ. AZ continues to amaze me. For example: sterility and late maturation are problems in real life albino and tux strains, just as in AZ. I have been playing the game for two months now but already have dozens of fixed strains on file...I never could have done this with real guppies. I have been able to apply every technique I used with real guppy genetics to AZ guppies. I doubt that all real world genetic possibilities are contained within AZ, nor have I seen anything like a mutation YET, but what is in the programming is astonishing imho. I read somewhere that there are over 5000 possibile strains within AZ and I hope to find most of them.
